Miss Dot's Pound Cake Recipe & the Secret Ingredient

If you watched the season five finale of Home Town, the Myrick Home had a stunning reveal. The hand-printed wallpaper in the grand foyer, the rich blue hues graced the walls, and thoughtful details accented each room. Yet Erin and Ben found the richest surprise of them all in the original cupboards of the kitchen. Miss Dot's handwritten recipe.

Miss Dot recalls when Erin and Ben called her for the first time.

“Erin called me when they were tearing down the cabinets in Mrs. Bunny’s kitchen; she saw a piece of paper in the cabinet. It had my phone number on it and the cake recipe on it. I didn't put all the recipe on there, but she called that number, and I answered. She said, “Is this Miss Dot?”  I said, “Who’s calling?” She told me who it was and asked if I’d bake a cake. Of course, I said yes!”

What Miss Dot didn’t know was that she would be baking a cake on a national television show, where millions would instantly fall in love with her fun spirit and obsess over her delicious pound cake recipe.

“I think people liked it so much because anybody can make that cake if they want to. It is so simple to make!"

After the episode, scores of viewers scrambled ingredients together to try the easy recipe that Erin, Ben, Mallorie, and everyone in Downtown Laurel loved so much. Then, they began posting their pound cakes on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. With each post, Miss Dot's easy recipe would inspire others to try it too. Within a few days, Miss Dot's pound cake had taken over the internet. But, of course, no one was more shocked than Miss Dot herself.

“My daughter follows a lot of those pages on Facebook, and she told me what was going on. People were posting their cake pictures and the nicest messages. I appreciate all the beautiful words that people have sent all because of a cake. I appreciate them very much. May God bless every one of them.”

While Home Town viewers have gotten a taste of what makes Miss Dot so unique, her heartfelt wisdom and giving spirit are the secret ingredients to everything she does in life.

“When I first worked for Miss Bunny, I’d do a lot of her baking for her because she was an older lady. I sure did love her. I baked many cakes for her neighbors and friends — black, white, all different kinds of people. Everybody likes cake. It didn’t make no difference, and still don’t.”

Miss Dot can't look at a pound cake without thinking about Miss Bunny and her beautiful house, and she was excited to share that with Miss Myrick. Thus, a tradition passed from one beloved homeowner to another.

“It was exciting to be on the show and to do something good for somebody. Especially after all we’ve gone through the past year and a half. It felt good to uplift somebody else. I’ve always loved cooking for people. So it not only uplifted them [Erin & Ben] to help Miss Myrick, but it uplifted me to help her, too.”

When asked about any other delicious secret recipes, Miss Dot said she had a mean dumpling recipe. The secret is using hen instead of chicken. Perhaps that recipe should resurface for all of us to try. Until then, enjoy making Miss Dot’s Pound Cake recipe here:
