#547 Veteran’s Home.
For our mission project, we were assigned to a volunteer-run shelter for homeless veterans in Asheville, NC. I was expecting something totally different than what we found. I was expecting shellshocked Vietnam veterans, but what we found were normal, extremely friendly and kind men who ate lunch with us and asked about Mississippi, asked our boys where they wanted to play football after high school, told us how much they appreciated our help. They’d fallen on hard times after leaving the military, and the ministry happening there was awesome. They got every ounce of our energy today. My group planted flower beds and did landscaping, the other groups pressure washed sidewalks and grills, painted the building and curbs, chopped vegetables and helped prepare lunch, cleaned offices and residences, and generally helped however we could.
