The Secret to Great Home Design

As an accountant by trade, I find it very difficult to articulate my style. I also find it very difficult to understand why I'm an accountant but, hey, that's another story for another day! 

Here lately, I've been forced to really think about what drives my choices with home design and I just couldn't put my finger on it until a few days ago. 

 

Growing up in south Mississippi we are all raised, as natural as if we are learning the ABC's, to be hospitable to others around us. Heck, Mississippi's tag line is "The Hospitality State"...we even have a pageant which I've written about here. It's a big deal and I've always loved the fact that we celebrate something as simple as being nice and welcoming to others. It's been a huge part of my life and as it turns out, continues to be. 

 

 

Without even realizing it, I've approached home design with the same mentality: making a space comfortable and interesting. Welcoming. Collected. An experience. 

 

Hospitality in it's most basic form.
This quote by Maya Angelou gives me chill bumps,
"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
For me that has always meant plush, comfy furniture, lots of cozy nooks, vintage quilts, calm paint colors and decorating with items that have stories and are important to our family.  Things that matter. Paying attention to all the details that make a space inviting, relaxing and interesting. 
It's so easy to get caught up in the Pinterest-perfect mentality. Don't. Take your time completing a room. Early on, I wasted so much money on things to 'fill up' a  space....I've learned to invest time in finding quality pieces and that it's ok to leave a wall blank until you find the perfect something. Don't rush it. You'll save money in the long run and you'll have a space that you'll love forever. 
 

 If you design your space around this one concept, there is absolutely no way to lose: Only fill your home with things that mean something, feel good or serve a purpose....and I PROMISE, it's like magic - I can't explain how it happens actually.....it really all does come together and will look amazing. And if you come across something that accomplishes all 3 of those - jackpot! 

 

Anyone that walks through your door, including yourself, will feel the love and warmth that your home provides and remember it forever. Because the best homes make you leave feeling better than when you came.
